Painted on a black-gessoed canvas, this acrylic painting is a
valentine to the surrealist Salvatore Dali, whose "Hallucinogenous
Bullfighter" inspired the images found on Big River Beach, my
favorite here in Mendocino. The child is supposedly Dali himself
as a child, and can be found in many of his works, including "The
Spector of Sex Appeal," "Gala with Two Lamb Chops Balanced on
Her Shoulder," and "Triangular Shadow." The idea of the observer
on the beach appears many times throughout Dali's work, particularly
"The Spector of Sex Appeal."
